All the best

Good luck tomorrow guys. Despite injury and dropped points and referees from the sheltered workshop I've had a ball again this season. Look forward to the awards night where I should be in line for several gongs (dummy spit of the year, most ridiculous motivational speech etc).
Enjoy your last outing!

Blew It.

So Old Boys dropped two points against Mako's, and had we done the necessary ourselves yesterday, we'd still be in with a chance.

So where can we lay the blame?
Shanes' Son?
Can only blame ourselves, although our home record of only 1 win all season does tend to suggest that our linesmen have been far to honest in calling us offside, whilst our opponents take advantage of their home supplied lino's. Shane really should have taught his son not to be so damn honest!

The no-double-header (except when there will be a double header) rule
That washed out game against Balgownie has come back to haunt us, although given our home record who's to say we'd have beaten them anyway?

Pet burial sessions?
If there was a gold medal awarded for the number of injuries sustained in a year, we'd have won it by a landslide. Tony, John and Shayne's protracted absences have affected us badly. I think we should seriously consider getting a physio next year - preferably a blonde, nubile nymphomaniac (that only has eyes for me).

A 5 game winning start when it all looked so promising..yet if we don't at least draw next weekend, it could see us drop to 8th. Very surprising finale given the ability of the squad.

Still, it's been fun.

Why are we here?

Is it the groupies? The adulation of millions? The money and all that it brings? Is it the chance to run around like headless chickens, yelling at each other and pointing out our collective and individual faults?
Or is it something else? The chance to play a team sport with your mates and have a bit of a laugh. A bit of banter, a beer, a bit of exercise to make the beer taste deserved.
What do we want to recall of this season when we're old(er) and grey(er)?
So, plenty of questions there. The answers, only you guys know.
With the finals now out of our hands, though teasingly not yet out of reach, it could be time for a rethink. Last Saturday's performance was that of a team too anxious, too fraught and probably taking itself too seriously. None of it helped. Perhaps it's time to lighten up. Pass and move. Run hard. Work. But win or lose, good or bad, it might be time to do it with a smile instead of a snarl.

We are still in it

Old Boys crushing 6-0 loss to Puma Masters leaves us with a mathematical chance of making the semis. If the Old Boys, missing their main striker through injury, get one point or less from their final matches against the Makos and Jamberoo and we win both our games, we will sneak into fourth place.
While last week was a harrowing result, the bright side is we created enough chances to win three games. The Pumas proved a tough adversary in our first match but we are fond of suggesting we are good enough to beat anyone, so here is a chance to prove it.
Russell Vale have gone ahead of us into fifth but they have a bye in the next two rounds.
Six points to us and one to Old Boys would put us into the four. Unfortunately two draws to the Old Boys would, under the current rules, see them advance on a better head to head record. I would argue that this is unfair based on our home game against them being washed out, but they are 10 goals better off on GD than us anyway.
Now is a good time to know who is here this week, who is injured and who has actually retired.

Uni 2, Chogs 2

Finals football will almost certainly elude the Chogs again this season after a shattering draw against Uni. The silence was deafening after the match as the Chogs let the magnitude of the previous 90 minutes sink in. Twice we took the lead yet could not hold it as we rushed the play despite being confronted with clearly the worst opposition we have faced in two years.
The chances started from the first minute and continued through to Ant's final charge in the dying seconds. Yet apart from Matt's header and Kevin's opportunism after their keeper had handed us the second goal, we squandered enough chances to win three games.
Perhaps we were a couple of bodies short but we still had two subs to their one. Yes, the referee was a plonker, but we've come to expect that by now.
Anyway, some words were said (about retirement and other things) and hopefully everyone has had a chance to reflect and move on. Two games to go and those bodies can have a nice long rest.

Who's in?

Hey all
Yes, it's another must winner this weekend against Uni. The game is scheduled for Beaton Park - the best entrance being from Gipps Street (where Wollongong Olympic juniors play). So far we have Andy, GP, Ian, Michael and John sidelined so please let me know if you're adding to that long list.

remaining games

With the old boys showing some sportsmanship (I've seen that happen in professional games, the one exception of course being the red pikies from South London who scored against Sheffield United that way, followed by their manager not seeing the incident...) but I digress..

Although we're four points off the top, all is far from lost as the sides above all all have to play each other:
IFS Rangers 33
Puma Masters 30
Old Boys 29
Jamberoo 28
Coastal Hogs 24
Albion Park 23
Shellharbour 23
Russell Vale 23

Next weeks games between Jamberoo/IFS and Old Boys/Pumas could see us back to 1 point outside the top 4

Jamberoo: IFS (H) Fernhill (H) Old Boys (H)
IFS: Jamberoo (A) Albion Pk (A) Pumas (H)
Old Boys; Pumas (H) Makos (H) Jamberoo (A)
Pumas: Old Boys (A) Chogs (A) IFS (A)
Russell V: Albion Pk (H) Balgownie (A)
Albion Pk: RV (A) IFS (H) Chogs (A)
Chogs: Uni (A) Pumas (H) Albion Park (H)
S Makos: Old Boys (A) Fernhill (A)

Old Boys are good guys shock

This appeared on an IAFA forum I look at. Makes for interesting reading. Looks like the Old Boys have got a leap on us as well, leaving us four points out of the four. But looks as if that big bully of a striker might be hurt (sure you are thinkg of him TT) and perhaps AP Cows will come to us for the last match out of contention.

Albion Park Cows v's Old Boys - Master div 2.Old Boys are leading 1-0 late in the first half when their striker goes down with a sickening foot injury. The Albion Park team seeing the player down put the ball out. It takes about 10 minutes to deal with the injury. When the game resumes, Old Boys forget momentarily that the ball had been put out by Albion Park and don't return the ball and score from the ensuring play. 2-0. It only takes a moment for Frank Price and and some of the other Old Boys players to realise that in the honored tradition of football the ball had not been returned to Albion Park. Albion Park Captain (me) approaches Old Boys captain - Frank Price and asks if he would consider conceding a goal to nullify their own goal. If you were Frank, what would you do?
Before you answer the question you need to be aware of some other facts.
1. Both teams are fighting for a spot in the top four. The winner stays in the four, the looser will no doubt slip out of the top four.
2. The last time both teams played Albion Park smacked Old Boys 3-0 and really dominated them.
3. The Old Boys first goal came in the first few minutes of the game and was as a result of a keeper error. Since that time they had been under the pump from Albion park who had dominated the game and field position for the past 30 minutes.
4. Old Boys were down on troops. With the loss of their striker (a vital player) they were down to the bare 11 with no subs at all. In addition, one of their remaining players is playing with a knee injury and can hardly move around the park. Albion park on the other hand have 16 players, plenty of subs to wear them out with.
5. Old Boys are running with the wind advantage in the first half which they will loose in the second half.So now you know all the facts. If you were Frank what would be your decision. I know many, many teams under those circumstances would have said "No."
However, in the ultimate act of good sportsmanship, Frank Price and the rest of their team did not hesitate in saying "Yes" and immediately conceded an own goal from the restart.
To me this is what Amateur football is all about. Teams who enjoy playing the game and realise there is more to life then winning. For the record, I would like to applaud Frank and his boys for being great sports. I hope every other team in the league will read this and follow their example.
For the record, Old Boys went on to win the game 3-2 in a thriller. Well done boys and best of luck for the rest of the season.
M.Rosete Albion Park Cows.

Chogs winded 2-0

Jamberoo took the wind out of our sails with a clinical second half performance. We did well to go to break all level after running into the strong blow and created two of the better chances of the opening period. Gary H found himself free on the edge of the box but put the ball over and Ant's later freekick just cleared the crossbar.
Instead of using the wind to get field position then work close passes, we got seduced by its power in the second term and sent far too many long balls aimlessly out for goalkicks or straight to their keeper. In response Jamberoo played a close control game, running well and keeping the ball on the deck.
Their classy number 10 set up the opener for their No 23 early in the second half, beating Dean as he slid in for a tackle on the right, getting to the byline and cutting back. It was the approach we should have been taking at the other end but weren't. Still, we got back into the game and dominated for a 15 minute period, as Dave stormed forward ,where we had a few strong shots straight at their keeper and a couple of close calls where the ball just wouldn't fall for us. With 10 minutes to go Gary H, who had done an excellent man marking job to shut their playmaker out of the match, was sacrificed for a more attacdking formation. The playmaker promptly scored with a sweet shot low past Hector. Deflated we walked through the remainder of the game.
Jamberoo jumped four points clear of us. Russell Vale lost 5-4 to Puma Masters to stay a point behind us and Makos are now there as well after pumping Uni 8-2. But our finals chances could hinge on the yet to be posted AP Cows v Old Boys result. A draw would be best, followed by a Cows win. If they lost then we are four points outside the four with three to play.
Updates to follow.

Cows' manure: UPDATE

AP Cows suffered a shock 4-1 loss to Uni last weekend, a result which catapults us into fifth place and gives us a huge boost ahead of Saturday's match. Coming off a bye, the Cows blamed the break and "shite refereeing" for the loss on the official IAFA website. Other results included IFS drawing 1-1 with Old Boys and Russell Vale drawing 3-3 with Makos.
Jamberoo and Pumas drew 1-1.
The table shows we have everything to play for but we will likely need three wins from our final four games to make the semis.
This is how the finals contenders sit.
IFS 33
Pumas 27
OBFC 26
Jamberoo 25
CH 24
Cows 23
RV 23
Makos 20.

Please remember tomorrow is family day for the Hogs.

Jamberoo, rhymes with . . .

Can it be true? According to our availability charts only Graeme P is likely to be missing from the 19 this week, leaving us with a couple of players too many for the visit of Jamberoo. Now I'm sure there are a couple of you out there concealing knocks that could do with an extra week's rest. If that's you, get in quick to register your willingness for a week off or stand by as management makes some tough decisions. It would be a fantastic boost to arrive with 16 players for another must win match against a team we have yet to beat in two seasons.
The club is also putting on a family day this weekend, so bring your wine hog and little hoggies along to support the day. We are on the back field at 1pm. I think the back field has been kinder to us than the main field this season already.

Crows 2, Chogs 3

A goalscoring cameo from Fungus sealed a desperate come from behind win with the season on the line. Two down after quarter of an hour and with their young keeper in amazing form, the Chogs refused to lie down and were rewarded with a second win in the past nine games.
The Crows scored two from long range as the 3-2-3-2 lineup failed to mark up sufficiently under attack but a change to 4-4-2 brought more solidity at the rear. While the Crows ran the game around their three young 'uns, they were vulnerable at the back and gave us some good openings. GD sizzled a shot towards the top corner and thought he had scored his first goal of the season, only to have it tipped away. Still we maintained the pressure and Andy got us on the board with a fantastic strike which left the keeper flailing. While that goal gave us confidence Balgownie came close again, striking the bar before the break.
Injuries were again causing concern - Phil and GP succumbing to ankle problems and sending Fungus to his car to get the kit he had packed just in case.
We got the best possible start to the second half, however. Gary J got free of the defence to get one on one with the keeper but stumbled over ther ball under pressure from a defender. We managed a crack on goal which was cleared of the line but Gary retrieved it and cut back a perfect ball to GD who hammered in the goal which had eluded him for too long.
Yet another draw wouldn't be enough and we responded as Fungus entered the fray. Andy got free on the left, drew the keeper and sent in a pass across goal. Despite his limiting groin injury Fungus gave it everything and got to the ball in time to ram it home. He could have added a second soon after and Sean missed another chance to give us a two-goal cushion, dinking the ball over the advancing keeper but also over the crossbar.
As time ran out, their hard kicking keeper came up to take a freekick at goal inside our half. It was the first time he mis-hit one all day and as we scrabbled to take advantage of his field position he came across and hacked down a Chog. The ref gave a freekick but incredibly no card.
Andy got involved in a tangle with the oppition defenders and picked up a yellow for a late challenge on their keeper. Gary J came off with a swollen knee and thankfully the ref called it off after two minutes of injury time, with the coach cowering behind the dugout too afraid to watch the closing seconds.
Well done guys. Jamberoo this week and another three points a must.
Please check in with your injury updates.

Where is it?

Hi all
Roo's previous post suggested we are playing Balgownie at home. It's an away game at 3pm. Although Balgownie's home ground is listed as Judy Masters Park, this game appears on the draw as being at Kooloobong Oval, Keiraville . I'm trying to get this confirmed by the IAFA types. I'm pretty sure that's where we played Uni last year, although if someone can confirm that please let us know.
We are struggling for numbers again so let us know if you can't make it. The Crows lost just 1-0 to Old Boys last week. I guess it doesn't need to be spelled out that this is a must win. I think a loss will likely end our finals hopes.

Top 4 take advantage of lesser opposition

IFS, Jamberoo and Old Boys, as expected, took maximum points against the basement dwellers - although perhaps by not as a big a margin as they may have hoped - whilst the Puma Masters had a good home win over the Mako's. The results leave us 3 points outside the top 4.

IFS 5 Fernhill 0
Jamberoo 3 Uni 1
Old Boys 1 Balgownie 0
Pumas 5 Makos 3

Hopefully the next round of games should see us make up some ground (at home to Balgownie) as the top 4 all play each other (IFS v Old Boys and Jamberoo v Pumas). Russell Vale have potentially a tough game v Makos whilst Albion Park should expect to pick up three points v uni.

Table at
http://cia.com.au/spy/cgi-bin/table.cgi?fixture=fixture

Hopefully will be at training tonight but we have the builders in so it may prove a bit tricky. Not that I can run at all after Saturdays game (no change there I hear you say).

Chogs pay the penalty (Chogs 1- Russell Vale 1)

A battling performance on Saturday once again saw us come away with less than we deserved. Due to injuries, holidays, cat burying sessions, overworked groins...we were down to a bare 12 for the game. (Apparently Andy is still en route to the ground). In some ways the lack of substitutes whilst making it tougher for everyone, may have helped us get into and keep a steady rhythm. We certainly finished the game stronger than Vale.

In a hard fought but fair game chances were at a premium. We went ahead early in the first half when Anthony managed to get his head on a cross from Sean that was going slightly behind him. It was a fine finish to a good move.

Unfortunately the lead didn't last too long as Vales tricky number 8 worked some space for himself and curled a fine shot (possibly aided by the wind) into the far corner. There probably wasn't a lot we could have done about that one.

Once again chances came and went, but to be fair we didn't really put their keeper under too much pressure.

Late on came the defining moment of the game (and possibly, although hopefully not, the season). Graeme Duncan went on a steaming run into the box and was *ruthlessly* brought down. The ref probably had little option to send the Vale player off. Whilst the sending off and the booking count (hatchet man Matt picking up a consecutive yellow card for walking backwards too slowly) may have given the impression it was a dirty game, unlike last weeks game it was a clean match played in good spirit.

With me off the pitch (probably thankfully else I may have been writing about myself here) Anthony stepped forward to take the penalty kick and win us the game. Unfortunately he chose that moment to hit probably his worst shot of the season, scuffing the ball towards their keeper. Vale's shouts of elation were rapidly drowned out as the ref ordered the kick to be re-taken for encroachment. The second attempt was hit better, but alas sailed over the bar. S*** happens - kudos for stepping up to take it in the first place.

Even then, against 10 men we had chances to win it, Vale clearing one off the line from a back-heel and Sean heading agonisingly over from a corner with virtually the last kick of the game. Dave went on a mazy run deep into Vale's half - (his pause to catch his breath was probably the only time he stopped barking out Sergeant-Major type orders throughout the match)

Two points dropped? Possibly, but with that commitment and spirit the season is a long way from over.

Hogs one win off second place...

Admittedly we have dropped down to 7th place, but the performances over the last three games bodes pretty well. I think we've been unlucky to have only picked up two points in those games.

With only 4 points between 2nd and 8th there's still everything to play for.

Shellharbour stuck 4 past Balgownie, with one against them
Jamberoo surprisingly (to me) lost 3-2 at home to Albion Park who have now risen to third place.
Russell Vale drew with IFS, whilst the Old Boys hacked their way to an undeserved 2-1 win.
No score for the basement battle between Uni and Fernhill.

Gary, Shane has your ring and my chain. I forgot to get them back from him after the game.

Fantasy Premier league

Hey all

The EPL kicks off in a month and once again I'll be hosting the Harper League fantasy football comp. Last year Fungus held off some determined challenges to reign supreme with no amount of sledging from Ant or myself able to break him.

If you want to join up follow this link. It's fairly straightforward. The code you will need (once you have picked a team) is 147195-35771

You can change your team as many times as you like before the first game of the season but then you get one free change per week. In brief: All players are given a points rating. You pick a squad for under 100 points. They score points depending on goals scored or clean sheets etc.

We can talk you through it if you are struggling with the technology.

Here's that link

Old Boys 2 Chogs 1

Yet another bruising match against the Old Boys, yet another 2-1 result, yet another failure to make the most of our opportunities. Two soft goals against in the first half left us chasing the game and although the Old Boys barely threatened in the second period, we were unable to get more than Ant's consolation.
The Old Boys always come out kicking and it was the same story again - their No. 11 getting away with a dozen fouls before the ref finally pulled out the yellow card - one of four spread evenly across the teams.
They went a goal up when Hector and then Gary J failed to keep out a strong header but we recovered well enough and had some good chances. Matt miskicked when close to goal, Andy stormed through and powered a shot just over and Mark's drive was straight at the keeper. Ant floated a free kick over the defence and then just above Andy's head at the far post.
Our efforts received a kick in the guts with seven minutes left in the half, however. A long clearance came from the opposition keeper and with Hector back near his goalline, Kevin (guesting at sweeper) played a ball back to his feet. Hector lost control, the opposition striker snuck in and tucked the ball into the empty net.
We were running with the breeze and downhill in the second half and came out strongly through Ant's goal after 15 minutes. The chances kept coming while the Old Boys were restricted to a couple of poor long range freekicks.
Graeme D hit a powerful shot straight at their keeper, Ian scuffed his shot when alone and onside in front of goal, Gary J shot wide after four others had hacked their shots in a choatic goalmouth frenzy, the ball just eluded Andy as he bore down on goal and, right at the death, Ant couldn't climb high enough to meet a corner and his header went just over.
Adding injury to insult, Gary J had to be carried off with a knee injury near the finish after the last of many dangerous shoves in the back from their big front man. All we took away was a sour taste from the poor spirit the game was played in and the opportunities missed.

Hands up if you knew Helensburgh soccer was older than JB?

By GREG RENDELL
Guys,
You should all be aware that there is a celebration planned for 60 years of Junior Soccer in Helensburgh on 19th July in the new Workman’s Club. You may have seen banners around town. It would be great to see representation from the HOGS with a few tables. We already have a couple for the Sweat Hogs.
There is entertainment, plus DJ and dancing later. $35 per head for 3 course meal.
How about getting a few numbers together. I need confirmed numbers ASAP as we have to give an indication to the club.

THZero adds: If anyone is interested can they respond here or let Ian or Social Dave know. Sorry Ian but you seem the right man to help the Social Davemeister collate any interest.

Training video part 1

As the finals places look increasingly as if they could come down to goal difference I've decided to post this excellent training video which should be of benefit to our attackers and defenders alike.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMZiNQcEang

Around the grounds

None of the top four teams recorded wins last weekend but the sides immediately below us ramped up the pressure on the finals places.
Puma Masters were unable to capitalise on IFS's 1-1 draw against us and fell 4-3 against Albion Park, allowing that bunch of thugs to join us on 20 points and sneak ahead into fourth on goal difference.
IFS lead the way with 28 points, Pumas are second still on 23 and third-placed Jamberoo were held 3-3 by the Makos to move to 21 points. Russell Vale's result is yet to be posted but if they beat Uni, as expected, they will be will be one of three teams on 20 points.
Just below, Old Boys beat Fernhill 4-0 to move onto 19 points ahead of our match against them this weekend.
Four points now separate the teams between second and seventh place but second placed Pumas can be caught by us this weekend as they have the bye.

JB's cat scam

We've had OP and groin strains, kidney stones and heel spurs. But now come news of the most ridiculous injury of the season.
Skipper John B reveals he wasn't hurt getting out of his car, as falsely reported on Saturday.
"In the realm of ludicrous, I was burying our recently demised cat ( yes it was dead ) in the backyard," John tells Coastal Hogland. "Due to the rigamortis it had stiffened into a position such that the hole I had to dig in the solid clay of our backyard was of such customised shape that it involved a pick, mattock & shovel. Obviously I'm not built to be an undertaker for within minutes of finishing the burial, my lower back went into such a spasm I was unable to get up, down or even roll without shooting pains.
"Now 2 bouts of chiro & many voltarin tablets later it is just starting to ease up."
John says "this has happened to me before (ED: he obviously has trouble keeping cats alive) and usually rectifies itself over several days."
The skipper is out for the next two weeks (snow sports) but there are fears that it might be longer if the RSPCA cottons onto his record.

Chogs 1 IFS Rangers 1

The Chogs' finals aspirations will receive an acid test over the next fortnight after an injury struck team drew with the table leaders on Saturday.
Before the start of the round six teams from third placed Jamberoo to eighth-placed Makos were separated by just five points. Depending on the results elsewhere there is a good chance the draw will have dropped us out of the top four but most of our rivals still have a bye to come.
The next two weeks - against Old Boys FC and Russell Vale - are critical to our chances. In fact it is likely to be a tense fight to the finish before we can secure a top four place and a first finals appearance by the Chogs.
With Ian and Fungus on the sideline despite their injuries, and John suffering a back strain on the mornning of the match, we began with three substitutes to the Rangers none. That level of dominance didn't last for long, however, with Dean coming off early with a hamstring twinge.
We created the best chances early on - Michael blazing over from close range and Ant miss-hitting his first time shot after a superb cross from Gary H out on the right. With Matt and Andy closing down the midfield runs of our opponents and Dave keeping his back four organised and focussed it came as a surprise for us to slip 1-0 behind with IFS' first real threat.
A ball was slipped through to their teenage striker (he kept calling "pass it Dad!" and dad finally did), Dave stuck his arm in the air ala Arsenal in the 90s, the offside flag stayed down (rightly from my view) and the pimply one rolled the ball past Hector and into the far corner.
IFS had a surge of confidence after their goal and we needed to hang tough to prevent a second and get to halftime without further concession. The second period began much the same as the first with pressure from the Chogs and the equaliser can after 20 minutes. Gary H and Ant broke forward and Gary 's well timed pass took out the defender. Ant gathered it in and swept it past their keeper.
We had the better of the rest of the match and probably deserved victory. Ant smashed a shot just wide of the far corner, Fungus broke through on the right but was unable to float the ball over the advancing keeper and keep it on target and, at the death, Kevin lifted a ball from the right over the keeper towards Ant but it drifted out and landed on the roof of the net.
There was one final scare, when IFS had a free kick on the edge of our box from the same range as we've conceded against Jamberoo and the Makos recently. Hector was better placed this time, with a clear view and not behind his defensive wall, but the shot didn't get that far.
After the miserable performance against the Makos we have now come out even against two good top four sides. Last season, and again this year, our Achilles has been the performances against our lower placed rivals. This is when our commitment can not afford to waver.

Chogs vs IPS 1pm at home

Please let us know if you are out of Saturday's 1pm game against top of the table IPS this weekend. So far Sean, Graeme P and Mark are listed as missing.
We scored a tough 2-1 victory over them in the previous round and this is a crucial match for our finals prospects. A win would put us in striking distance of the top of the table and a loss could see us slip out of the top four.

Jamberoo 2 Chogs 2

Ant's first half double and Hector's late penalty save earned us a valuable point against top four rival Jamberoo on Saturday. Jamberoo started the day in third, one point clear of us and that's how the weekend finished as well with the fifth placed Russell Vale being tonked 4-0 by top placed IFS, who we meet at home this week.
It's shaping as a crucial fortnight in our bid for the finals, first against IPS and then Russeell Vale, but we will enter it with more confidence following a solid performance.
Ant's first came in the opening 15 minutes as he worked a one-two with JB and buried the ball in the far corner with the outside of his left foot. Matt C, returning after a month of hamstring problems, set up the second. He beat his man down the left, took the ball to the byline and put in a perfect left-foot cross for Ant to head home.
Jamberoo had scored 45 goals before this game and were always going to be a threat, albeit one we dealt with brilliantly in the opening half.
They finished the half the stronger team and continued that into the next 45 minutes - appearing to have the edge in fitness. We clammed up and got stuck deep in our territory for long periods. It took some catastrophic refereeing to gift them a way back into the game. A Jamberoo forward tumbled theatrically outside the box under no pressure and a freekick was awarded. For the second week running the wall and keeper couldn't prevent the ball sailing straight into the net.
We had an excellent chance to restore the two goal lead when Ant and Andy had a two on one against the Jamberoo defence but Andy shot just over with Ant unmarked in front.
That was rare Chogs pressure, however, and Jamberoo soon added a second. As one of our subs suggested, it looked like we were sitting back waiting to concede a third when we very nearly did. GP skidded in to clear a ball in the box, the home players called "slide tackle" and the blind old coot in black pointed at the corner flag (while meaning to point at the penalty spot). Gary J was among the loudest complainers over the soft decision and the Jamberoo number 10 told him to quit his bitchin until after he put the ball in the net.
His shot was feeble - an insult to No. 10s the world over really - and Hector fell to his right and parried it in front. Gary J cleared it away to have the last laugh.
On the plus side, the passing and control was significantly improved and we stuck in a couple of nice goals. In the end it could have been a gut wrenching loss but we got away with a point that keeps us in the finals spots for now.

Hogs v Jamberoo

Hi all
So far we have Graeme D, Sean and Fergus out of Saturday's match against Jamberoo (not counting the two long term crocks). That would give us the full 16. If you are not fit or can't make it please get on here and let us know.

CHOGS 1 MAKOS 4

Two sloppy concessions early in the first half set the tone for a disappointing result on Saturday. The Makos, beaten 3-0 at home by the Chogs earlier this season, turned up with an exceptional new No.9 and missing the weak defensive link from the previous encounter.
Backline hesitancy opened the door for two goals in the opening quarter of an hour and the Makos shot 3-0 up soon after that, opening the door for a rout.
Gradually, however, we started to get back into the match but the Makos' passing was always superior as the Chogs rushed the ball. A couple of observers mentioned they had to count the Makos team so sure were they that the visitors enjoyed a numerical advantage.
A goal before the break seemed crucial if we were to stage a comeback but it never arrived, despite the insecure away keeper. Gary J nodded a corner just wide, Graeme D floated a free kick onto the top of the crossbar and Ant put the ball in the net only to be denied by a linesman's flag.
The second half involved a lot of huffing and puffing but the Makos extended their lead midway through. Michael was wrongly adjudged to have brought down the No.9 on the edge of the box. From the freekick the ball arrowed into the far corner with Hector standing behind his wall.
Any had a chance to open our account, blazing just over, and new boy Barton couldn't direct his shot at the target after passing the keeper. Eventually a consolation arrived. Andy won a battle down the right and crossed for Kev who was wrestled to the ground by the keeper. Kev dusted himself off and scored from the spot.
We were outplayed by a better team performance and we will all realise we can play much better.

Sound off...

It was pleasing to see a good turn out at training tonight and it was a pretty sharp and enjoyable session. At this stage we have Fergus, Sean and Phil as well as the two long term crocks absent from the 21 for this week leaving us with 16. Matt is in doubt after a medical, um, "procedure" so in reality we should be playing with 15. There is still plenty of time for things to go wrong though.
Please email THZero or leave a note here or fill out the when i'm away section if you are missing and not on this list.

'Andy player that!

A debut goal from Andy W and season firsts for Michael and Kev gave the Chogs a much needed 3-0 victory over Fernhill on Saturday.
Taking over the No.10 shirt, AW made a promising start in his first outdoor match in four years, showing impressive pace and a strong left foot. Skipper John was also on board for the first time and immediately brought some calm and authority to the Chogs midfield.
Neither provided the "biggest" eye opener of the early stages - that honour goes to Deano, who chose an interesting place for his nervous prematch wee - the centre spot of the neighboring field. Ant, I wouldn't know how to cap that fine.
After the toss, the Chogs, a surprise 1-0 loser in the home match against this team, found themselves running up hill into a strong and persistent wind in the first half with two subs. The opposition were well manned, with four subs, and the early stages were a close battle before we edged ahead.
A high ball held up in the wind and the Fernhill keeper collided with a defender, spilling the ball. Kev was standing by to pass the ball into the empty net.
It was important to lead at the break and the running was much easier down hill and with the wind behind us in the second term. Their keeper dealt well with a few long shots while our defence found it easier to clear their lines with the help of the wind.
Hector was barely troubled, making one special reflex save however, but midway through the half we eased further ahead. Andy took the ball with his back to goal and pivoted to swing a cool shot into the far corner with his left foot. He contributed to a late third as well, pressuring the keeper and defence into more confusion which allowed Michael to move in and shoot into an empty net.
Fergus's day ended early with a recurrence of his groin strain, hurt as he thundered a long range effort off the Fernhill bar.
With Ant, GP, GJ and MC due back next week, along with the other newcomer Barton, the feeling is that the mini-slump has been left well behind and we have the personnel to compete strongly with the other leading teams.
Well played guys.

Who's in?

Hi all

I think we need to count some numbers for Saturday’s 3pm kickoff against Fernhill (down the coast end of Towradgi Road - no shower facilities from memory!).

John, can you let me know if Barton will play? And if he has an email?

Ok we have two new players signed up

Andy Warrington and Barton Coyle.

I think both are available. As Andy is a striker he can take over the No.10 shirt (I know, I would have retired it if it had been up to me) and I have No. 15 spare. If you appear in the wrong list below please let post here or email THZero asap.

At the moment we are showing 13 available.

Out

John, Shane, Tony, Ant, Sean, Graeme P, Matt, Gary J.

In: Graeme D, Pete, Kev, Fergus, Gary H, Ian, Phil, dean, Michael, Mark, Andy, Barton, Dave.

Towradgi

Does anyone know if Towradgi has any shower facilities? My annual shower is just about due.

The AFL's annual injury report makes interesting reading

"Well I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my (pelvis) that it didn't hurt.... And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert...." I've been having some dark moments lately but it could be that I'm listening to too much country music. Like the one about the old soccer player whose crop failed, dog died and just when he thought things couldn't get worse he suffered osteitis pubis chasing the bank man offa his land
In fact, on Sunday morning I spurned a coldie and kicked back with a few pancakes, only to choke on one at the most unsavoury vision outside my window. Yes, Fergus Rourke, a grown man with at least one brain, was running around kicking a football in a three-aside game. Man, what was that about? It must be addiction. How else to explain it when he had the previous week off knowing that last week's bye would give him two good weeks of rest for his long running groin problem. Of course you can all tell what happened next . . .
Having been there myself - a three-time victim of the same recurring groin injury three years ago before an eight week rest put it to rights, not to dwell on the current state of my wreck of a body - I am full of sympathy. I was still trying to digest it (Fergus's participation, not the pancake) as I kicked back in my Qantas seat on the way to watch another old crock (H Kewell) in action in Brisbane. A glance at the Sunday paper uncovered an interesting yarn from the AFL about injuries. I've put a link here for those who are interested (check out the full report in PDF form next to The Age's news story) . In summary, hamstrings and then groin strains and osteoitis pubis are the most disruptive injuries in the AFL. Each club on average lost players for 23 games last season because of hammies and 18 games for groin and OP injuries. Both these rates were higher than for cruciate ligament injuries, where there is, at least, a well defined path to recovery. The most interesting stat, for me, was that a whopping 38 percent of groin and OP cases in AFL teams were RECURRENCES. "Groin strains recur within the season at almost twice the rate of any other injury," the report found. "The recurrence for groin strains is 38%, for hamstrings 22%, for ankles 20%, for quadriceps strains 18% and for calf strains 9%."
At the ground, I got in early from the bar to watch the teams warm up. They had the cones out and did some similar contested games to the Chogs - including a fast paced and technically excellent 5v5 two touch contest between backs and forwards. They did all the syncro dynamic stretching and bounding, and no one yelled shit at them while they did it.
Anyway, for those who want to have a look the link is
http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/missing-in-action/2008/05/28/1211654122495.html?page=2

Meanwhile, Matt is out this week (I think everyone will be sheltering indoors to be honest) but hopeful of returning from his hammy injury a week later. John and Ian have meanwhile been doing some recruiting, with details to follow soon.

HOGS BBQ

Greg has asked that CHOGS participate with the after game BBQ on Saturday 7th June as we're all playing at home. Dependant on the weather, fingers crossed it's rained off because of our injury list, we'll all stay behind for some food, beer and bonding.

Looking at the table we're only 3 points from the top, we are still in the chase and nothing will be decided until the last game of the season.

I'll be collecting money from everyone to help our strikers get some contact lenses.......couldn't help myself!

See you all Saturday weather permitting.

At the risk if getting a fine...

may I humbly suggest a fine for the fine master for not updating the fines paid to him...Questions will be asked in the House if he suddenly announces a holiday in the Carribbean....

Hogs Off The Top

IFS have taken (temporary) leadership of the table, mostly thanks to our inability to put Fernhill away.
Russell Vale would have been top if they hadn't inexplicably dropped two points against Balgownie.

With only 2 points between the top 5 there's all to play for.
Unfortunately the other 4 teams at the top all have relatively easy games this week, so we may well even have dropped out the top 4 come Saturday evening.

A rain swept Saturday may be in order!

IFS 3 Albion Park 2
Jamberoo 5 Shellharbour 1
Old Boys 9 Fernhill 0
Puma Masters 3 Coastal Hogs 1
Russell Vale 2 Balgownie Crows 2

Roger, over and out...

Roger has decided that he won't have the desire to play for the Chogs this season and the search should probably begin for one or two reinforcements to turn the season around. Roger, speaking exclusively to coastalhogland.com's John Brandman, revealed he is bringing the curtain down on a long playing career.
"After 47 years of playing (I’m 57) I’ve decided to finally retire," Roger says. "Just to explain – I was injured most of last year and so decided I’d probably only play again at Masters 2nd division level or not at all – when that was not available I sort of decided that was time to stop and so I’ve been watching my son play for Thistles reserve grade and enjoying it.
"The call up came out of the blue a bit and I thought 'oh good, I’ll play' but I actually found that the desire was finally gone.
"This has nothing to do with the team – they made me very very welcome. I sincerely hope this doesn’t muck you round too much. . . The desire has finally gone – it will be just summer 7’s for me with the family. Please pass on my apologies."
Roger's decision probably means the Hogs should start thinking if they know of any others who might be interested in a game. Reinforcements were desperately needed in the second half on Saturday, with illness and injury taking a toll.

Pumas 3 Chogs 1

The bye can't come quickly enough for the crocked Chogs after a second straight defeat on Saturday. Having to play with 13 players - several of whom were suffering significant knocks or colds - proved too much for the Chogs who fell to a better organised and fitter team. There was no lack of effort, however, and the story might have been different but for a bit of luck and some better refereeing.
Sean's burst into the box in the first half was halted by a double foul from the Pumas defenders but the referee ("I don't think he's biased, just shit" said one spectator) somehow came to the conclusion that they both kicked the ball instead of Sean.
The Chogs set up defensively and it seemed to work in the start but a serious lapse of concentration led to the opening goal. A superb save from Hector had the opposition howling that the ball had crossed the goalline. As they berated the ref we failed to clear our lines on the left, a cross came in to the far post and we had no-one there to prevent the goal.
Ant came close but was decked by the keeper, who was clearly not going for the ball, and the ref again waved play on. At half time our newcomer Roger had to leave, which left us facing a tough 45 minutes with two subs and several of us limping.
The game swung decisively soon after the resumption. Mark's goalward header was parried by the Pumas keeper and the ball just eluded Sean as he he slid in at the far post with the net wide open. The Pumas scrambled it clear, pushed up the other end and Hitman clipped the heels of the opposition attacker as he moved into the box on the right. From my viewpoint a penalty was the right decision, but the call grated considering the two or three shouts we had rejected in the first half.
Hector chose the right way but the penalty was struck too well. The Pumas added a third soon after with some hesitant defending to blame but an own goal gave us a glimmer of hope with half an hour to play.
Kev tried a couple of shots from range which came close but ultimately the Pumas were in control and deserved their win.

BBQ 31st May

Firstly, unlucky result on Saturday, we'll kick their arse all over the park when we play them at home............very unlucky boys with so many injured.

Secondly, I think we should cancel Saturdays BBQ because we have so many walking wounded and hospitalised players. This will give everyone time to spend some quality time with their own families and allow you all to continue collecting raffle prizes for our end of season trip.

Is everyone in agreement??

Watch this space for couple of options on CHOGS end of season trip!

Cheers

Chogs vs Pumas

Ah, the calm! With everything settled down again after a feisty week it's time to look ahead at our clash with the Pumas on Saturday. As I hope to be along to run the subs, and make sure you do your bloody warmups properly I thought I'd throw in a bit of a game plan for your reading pleasure.
Considering the number of missing personnel this week and the decent standing of our opponents and I think we should approach the game with a cautious mindset and be happy with a draw or better. My feeling is we should be working desperately to keep them out in the first half and then looking to expand a bit if they tire as the game goes on.
I would be looking to set you up as a 4-5-1 line up this week, with Mark Smith and the two Graemes looking to choke up the centre of midfield.
So, four acroos the back with Gary Jordan, Dean and Gary Hardie playing the central roles between them with Michael, GH and Phil working the outside roles.
In midfield GD working his arse off in front of the back four with MS and GP in there with him, getting stuck into the dirty work and Ian, Kev or Ant working the flanks. Sean, struggling with an injury, can be your hold the ball up man up front, as can Ant or Kev on occasion. Let's go in for a fight.

Saturdays game

Does anyone actually know where Senior College - Port Kembla is?

Putting out the fire with gasoline

By Gary TT Jordan

Hey all you chogsters.

Well what a weekend I had last. Had to be at Albion Park by 8.00am both Saturday and Sunday for a bit of training with the Fire Brigade. Always beneficial for a part time fireman like myself and I had the added bonus of enjoying it all along the way.

Using the rescue equipment is generally stressful but hanging upside down 5 metres of the ground can put it all in perspective.

I read the blog report about the game and was surprised but not disappointed we went down to Fernhill. In the first round last year we beat them 3-0 at home and I thought we may have been lucky. It was our first win for the year and our first home game having started with 3 away fixtures. Do we all remember last year. Just from the top of my head we played 18 games for 7 wins 3 draws and 8 losses. Could be wrong. I kill far too many brain cells to predict anything with absolute certainty. But I do recall enjoying most of the year.

Having read the comments from the match report just now it’s difficult to imagine that the Chogs I’ve been running around with this year were the same team from last year. I know we’ve had a few changes but not a full team transplant.

People talking about goals scored and those conceded. How poorly some thought they performed and whether others should have even been on the paddock. Without appearing ignorant I can honestly say that our position on the ladder and who we play next week is never something I pay much attention to. We all play the game because we love it. We get such enjoyment from watching it that we can’t wait to get out there each weekend and amplify that enjoyment by playing it. Well listen to this home truth.

Hospital casualty wards are filled every Saturday and Sunday afternoons with old blokes like us trying to turn the clock back 20-30 years. (A too aggressive cow springs to mind) Think about our own team here. I don’t mean to make an example of some of our players but Tony and now Shane are out for the year with John no certainty to come back. Who isn’t carrying an injury or struggling to get out of bed any other Sunday? OK Phil, you’re one right out of the box.

You know there’s nothing more enjoyable or comical than watching young kids run around Saturday mornings. And there’s nothing more sad than hearing overzealous parents screaming from the sidelines telling those kids what to do. I play the game each week hoping I have a fair game and that I avoid that trip to casualty. The result is secondary. I don’t need to know who we are playing until we take the field and even then it don’t matter.

The game is after all a game. One that nowadays I look forward to watching my son play more so than playing myself. The game is a social outlet for our family and others as well I would hope. Lets all look forward to the final day in May.

Before then we have the opportunity to play the ‘greatest game of all’. As a bonus we play a bunch of blokes we’ve never met at a ground only those experienced players among us would even know of.

Fortunately this decaying body will not have to work again on a Saturday this year. Unfortunately I won’t get to hang upside down well of the ground. Unless I’m saving someone’s life. Now wouldn’t that be something really important.

TT

ED'S note: If you wish to have access to post items directly onto Coastal Hogland please ask TH10 how. It's quite straightforward and all should enjoy the right to do this should they require.

Bye BBQ & Winning Team

Firstly, lets hope Shane recovers fully from the knee operation.

Secondly, is everyone still keen on having the BBQ on the 31st or should we hold back for the end of season trip, please respond to this posting or let Gary/TH know how you feel, our end of season trip can include all the prizes and raffles to make the weekend even more fun.

Thirdly, sorry if I was over the top regarding my defence of our defence, our front line had a bad day on Saturday as did most of the team including myself. Everyone will rasie their game on Saturday and come away with a great result, the team is strong enough to win this comp.

Good luck!!

Quit threat rocks the Chogs

The crisis at table topping Coastal Hogs dramatically widened Wednesday when star sweeper Social Dave threatened to quit and his backup Shanus was ruled out for the season.
As recriminations turned personal following Saturday's shock loss to the cellar-dwelling Fernhill, SD first taunted the attack with allegations that they were unable to put the ball between the posts and under the bar then reacted with anger when it was pointed out that the defence was not up to the standard of AC Milan's in the late 1990s.
There was no respite on the injury front with Shane's knee requiring surgery. Beyond that, the level of personal gripes are starting to grate some team members.
"For Chrissakes, we are top of the table with five wins and a loss," said TH10. "It's not the freaking Champions League - it's Masters 2. We have had five goalscorers this season, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and now a couple of people look to be taking this all a bit too seriously.
"Who would have thought we were the sort of people to sledge someone who turned up to run subs, make personal attacks about our various abilities or threatened to pick up our ball and run off home when someone had a different opinion to ours."
Meanwhile in the inevitable period of transfer speculation, the Chogs have been linked to several players who could solve the issues they are confronted with currently.
"Yes, we haven't scored as many goals as Man Utd but we have had fewer losses than them," said TH10. "Yes our backs struggle to run the 50m up and back 40-50 times a Saturday, but I think I've come up with a solution. Harry Kewell is available currently but I'm not sure if we are prepared to gamble on someone with his fitness concerns, particularly in our current situation.
"I'm confident, however, that we could bring in someone like Eto'o or Ronaldhino. And, if SD carries through with his quit threat, then maybe we will move for Materazzi.
"Regardless, it's clear that the team we have is deeply flawed and will never amount to much more than a half decent Masters 2 side unless we spend more time bagging the shite out of each other."

Bubble bursts for coastalhogland.com

By Ant

Back on their home paddock for the first time in over a month wasn’t enough for Coastal Hogs to maintain their unbeaten run, going down to a committed Fernhill side 1-0.

With Arsene Wenger unavailable to run the team on the day, a little guy with a moustache was placed in charge of the squad for what was expected to be another win for the team, however the ball just did not bounce Hogs' way all day. After the first 5 minutes of constant barrage of Fernhills’ goals by Sean and the like, Fernhill came up with the first goal of the match with a scrappy effort that saw 3 of their men in the 6 yard box deciding who was to kick it in the back of the net. From there Fernhill got a sniff and then promptly changed their formation to what seemed like a 2-2-6 which threw Hogs off balance. Matt put his hand up to the bench in the first half and was never to be seen again; in fact he was seen still clutching his hamstring when he arrived at the Sutherland Shire border and is in doubt for the weeks ahead. Half time came at a good time so the Hogs could regroup and listen to some words of wisdom from the ‘mild mannered moustached maestro’ and a chance to reflect on another poor start to a game. The 2nd half went by with Coastal Hogs playing the far better football. You could’ve counted the ball going into the Fernhill attacking half on 1 hand. One long through ball saw Fernhill have a chance to seal the win if it were not for the sprinting efforts of Hitman Hardie to clear the ball. Unfortunately this left Hitman feeling his ankle and saw him retire to the bench for the remainder of the game. Still Hogs had their chances to draw the game and indeed win it. With both Graeme’s running through the middle and down the right Hogs were still a chance right up until the final whistle but just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net. Ant missed a golden opportunity with 5 minutes minute on the clock diving full stretch to head the ball just over the cross bar, then Fergus had a chance with a matter of seconds left from an Ant corner but just couldn’t get the power into the header. Disappointment was evident after the match with everyone having a story about why it all went so wrong – was it Ant losing the toss for the first time in the last 4 weeks; was it Graeme P struggling to run because a camera was inside his never never region; or was it because we just lacked a little intensity – for the record after 15 beers each and 4 bottles on wine over dinner on Saturday night, Fergus and Ant came to the conclusion what had happened . . . they scored 1 goal and we didn’t. Heads up Hogsters there is always next week. See you all at training.

Injury and lino updates

Shanus is out of this week's game and his long term future is in doubt after suffering the knee injury against IFS Rangers. He has yet to get in for a physio assessment but is still in some pain.
Shanus will attend on Saturday to run the subs bench in the absence of TH10.
GP, who injured his back last week, rates himself as a strong chance to take part, meaning we should have 14, although that includes Fungus, who is struggling with a groin strain.
Fernhill have been soundly beaten on most occasions this season but it is important to guard against complacency.
There were no surprises in the result of our latest poll - 10 out of 10 who voted would rather pay a linesman than do it themselves. This Saturday we are meant to supply two linesmen for the 3pm game following ours. Shanus's son Jai will take one flag and I'm looking into another option as well. This money ($24 each linesman each game) should come from the fines. The club has also responded on this issue but arranging for two linesmen to cover when we were expected to have four linesmen on a Saturday. That will cost us $90 so the total fee will be that plus whatever extra we shell out on the other two appointments.
Please keep in mind that these linesmen will be kids under 18 and are therefore untouchable in terms of harassment and criticism.
Good luck on Saturday!

Around the hard, unkempt, sloping pitches...

EDITS TO FIX SCORE IN OLD BOYS V MAKOS

Fernhill (our next opponents) slumped to their third 7-0 defeat in a row against Jamberoo, who as a result have now moved into second place - 5 points behind the mighty Chogs.

Also on 10 points are the Puma Masters who had a 1-1 draw with Albion Park (and that was just the number of players from each side admitted to hospital).
The Pumas and Jamberoo have 3-1-1 records.

Shellharbour are fourth following a 5-2 victory over Old Boys FC.

In the weekends other game, Uni Gangrenes reverted to type, scoring two but conceding six against Russell Vale - who with their game in hand could well join the chasing pack on 10 points.

CHOGS BBQ

Another great result but the games are getting tougher, luckily we've got the depth to continue winning.

The 31st May is getting closer, Ant & TH will look at the surf club should the local leagues team be playing at home.

Can everyone please start bringing something from work for the raffle we'll hold during the BBQ, it's a bit of fun and we'll only charge $1 per 5 tickets, it'll help towards our end of season trip and make the day even more enjoyable.

Again, everyone bring your prizes to training or the Saturday game, we've only got 3 weeks left.

Keep up the fantastic effort and thanks to the 'Fines Master' for finaly remembering his tin!

Cheers

"Stones" Izzard and Ant music rock the Rangers

Sean's coolly dispatched penalty and Ant's Thierry Henry-esque stunner led the table-topping Chogs to a high five wins straight on Saturday. The 2-1 victory over the IFS Rangers came in the toughest match of the five so far and the injury list suffered another addition with Shanus suffering a knee injury which ruled him out of the second half on Saturday and will require medical attention this week.
The Rangers started the better of the two sides as the Chogs struggled to get out of their own half in the opening quarter of an hour and should have gone 1-0 up when a ball from the left found their big striker unmarked in front of goal. He headed powerfully but Hector made a superb reaction save to tip it over the bar.
The Chogs dug in at the back and resisted the Rangers, despite the hosts' at times impressive passing game, then struck on a rare break forward. Kev was released down the right and swung a cross towards GJ only for it to be blocked by a defender's raised arm. The ref, who did nothing to hide his friendship with the home team before the game, did the right thing and pointed to the spot.
(GJ also did the right thing after claiming his freak goal a week earlier was a fluke. This time he made no infraction of the strikers' code by claiming he would have easily buried the header if the defender hadn't handled).
Sean, nicknamed "Jagger" because he's always with the (kidney) stones, stepped up and wrongfooted the IFS keeper.
The Rangers responded strongly but couldn't get close to the Chogs goal and as halftime approached the game started turning more and more our way.
A backline reshuffle followed Shane's departure and the midfielders rose to the task of extra work. GD saw more ball than in the first half and and played out the full second period while Ian also fought his ground. Matt, playing through the centre in the absence of Fergus, ran hard and sent the game decisively our way with an excellent ball over the top of the Rangers' defence.
Ant used his height and power to win a heading duel and then stormed away down the left, smacking the ball hard and low into the bottom right corner as the keeper advanced.
The Rangers were walking now but managed to rouse for a final fling. A goal bound shot hit Dean on the arm and the referee gave a penalty with four minutes left.
Hector, who memorably saved the previous penalty he faced last season, went the right way and parried the shot brilliantly only for the referee to order the kick retaken because he hadn't blown the whistle. Hector got his hand on the next attempt as well, but the ball squeezed through.
What followed were a tense couple of minutes. Ian fouled a Rangers player out near the right touchline (then kicked the ball fiercely into Shane's nads) and a dangerous freekick floated in from the right. A Rangers player (yes, he looked Italian) fell down dramatically in the box, screaming like a two year old who has just been woken up in a car at the Scarborough Wombarra Bowlo, and the ref blew his whistle and hurried over. To his eternal credit the ref gave the cheat a yellow card, although he inexplicably let play continue with a corner and the Chogs were hanging onto their three points at the end. The final whistle came five minutes earlier than usual because our opponents were late for the start. Who knows what they might have achieved in that extra time, but anything more than they got would have been an injustice.

A Fine Time Was Had By All

By FM Ant
You would think the fines would lighten up somewhat as we are a team sitting on top of the table with seemingly not many worries at all . . . but reality is that it is becoming easier and easier to fine people. After updating this week’s game, we now have amassed $402 in fines so far this season. Thanks to all the contributions made on Saturday by individuals the fines tin now has $249 in it.
Notable fines this week just gone: $2 for Pete for saving the wrong penalty and $1 for Sean for waiting until everyone was around and then announcing that he was paying $50 to the fines tin (show off). Then there was Shane who got fined $2 for going down injured but not actually knowing what he injured, and of course Ian who’s best kick of the season cost him $2 as he hit it straight into Shane’s nuts. And of course we can’t forget the non-players for the week Fergus who ‘would’ve played if it was a final’ ($1 for big noting) and Mark who apparently has finished his daughter’s 20th birthday celebrations and is looking forward to playing next week before he has a break to start making
arrangements for her 21st. If you’re not sure what you owe or what you’re being fined for, see the fines section to the left.

Good win boys, see you all at training.

(Very brief) Match preview: IFS Rangers v Chogs

Sorry about the lateness of this but I've been out all day getting fitted for a Zimmer frame . . .
The Chogs will have 15 players Saturday for their fifth outing, against IFS Rangers at Judy Masters Park, Balgownie (Para or Brian Streets, chaps) at 1pm.
Fergus, battling a groin strain, joins TH10, JB and MS on the sideline as the Hogs attempt to keep their winning record intact. Last season we played IFS in our first ever Chogs outing, falling 3-2 after leading 2-1 with 10 minutes to play. In the rematch we won 6-4 in an incident packed game where Shanus ended up in goal for injured Hector.
In a bid to avoid the trouble we had with subs when fielding 15 against the Makos, I propose we stick with the 3 for 2 system in the wide backs (MA, PC and GH), central defence sweeper area (SK, DD, DJ) and attack (KS, GJ and KS). In the midfield we will have 5 for four - (MC, SI, IS, GP and GD). Depending on GP's fitness levels and the state of the game, we might change this at the break to slip him back and brink SK into the midfield.
See you there at 12.40pm for a warmup.

High stakes and kidneys

Medical researchers* are at a loss to explain the "Chogs Phenonomen" - a bizarre scenario whereby almost every old bloke who has pulled on the famous black and yellow stripes this season has ended up sick (NB: not to be confused with "fully sick" as in good) or injured.
"I think we might be looking at a cluster situation," said TH10 tonight as he prepared to break news of the latest medical drama to strike our ranks. "These illnesses and injuries are too prevalent to be mere coincidence."
Sean, who is about to depart OS for medical treatment under the guise of a "holiday", has been diagnosed with some rather impressive kidney stones. "Marbles" Izzard revealed exclusively to Coastal Hogland that a possible treatment is something you really don't want to contemplate.
"Turns out I have a 12mm stone in the left kidney, and 8mm in the right," said Marbles. "I have a follow up with the doc on Monday. F$%^ me, I don't think I'll be passing those. If I fall in a
screaming heap on Saturday, give someone the tip."
Although initially reluctant to share his pain with his teammates in the unbeaten Masters 2 outfit, he spoke out in the interests of our continuing medical education.
"I think Marbles realises that while we might not win the title this year, win or lose we will be well placed to study medicine part time in the future," said TH10.
On the subject of treatment, Marbles had some sombre words.
"Generally they get blasted. It's called Lithotripsy - basically sound waves targeting the stones via an external machine, smashing them into smaller, passable bits.
"I don't really want to consider the other treatments which can include a laser which gains proximity to the kidneys via the (willy). Fear and trepidation ensue. But isn't it amazing how much we are learning this year."
"I just have two wishes," said TH10. "One is they don't put the willy in a cast afterwards. And second, if they do, he doesn't ask me to sign it."
* No medical researchers were interviewed for this story.

Injury update

I know many of you have been deeply concerned and the news is dire, I'm afraid. The dishwasher is buggered and must be replaced. Rob (No. 23 from the Cows) pronounced it dead at 9.45am today. It was doing okay until he jumped up and down on it, kicked it in the back and elbowed it in the dial.
Meanwhile, the number seven carted off in the ambulance on Saturday broke his shin bone in two places. Their sweeper suffered a groin strain and there were a few other moans and groans in their ranks after the game. For Hitman's benefit I discovered that the man who elbowed him in the eye last season has been forced to retire after snapping his achilles tendon in an over 40s competition at Jamberoo. Oh, and Rob said they were "looking forward" to the return game - whatever that means!

Everybody hurts . . .

The rumour mill is rife with tales of post-Cow woes. Anthony is hobbling around on a painful ankle after being smashed early on. TH10 is unhappy because the guy who did it is his dishwasher fixer and said dishwasher packed it in on the night before the match (spooky or what?). Does he call the guy, or stick to hand washing? Gary J, scorer of two glorious goals following a genius decision from the coach to play him up front, is staggering around on the knees of a 100-year-old. John Brandman would just like a knee that worked, full stop. Sean is putting his back to back CHOTY dreams on hold to escape OS for a month at a world renown clinic for fixing sore heels (or did I read that wrong?). The Austi papers are full of talk of Fergus Rourke's dodgy groin - is this a problem peculiar to those who speak with an Irish lilt? Dave Downing, leader of the meanest backline in town, is likewise groin impaired. His partner in crime, Big Dean, has a heel spur and Gary H is in late stages of the TH10 affliction osteoitis pubis - oh, and he got a nasty bruise from that guy who broke his leg on him. Shane just needs to step on the field before he starts to hobble, Matt Carroll is coming back from the flu. Dr Doolittle, aka Graeme P, has Chron's Disease (warning: DO NOT look this up on the web moments before a meal). GP reports that he must swallow a mini camera this week and walk around with it inside him. Sounds like an elaborate way to spy on our training sessions before he returns to his old stamping ground of Balgownie. The camera is also less invasive than the question from a teammate last week: "Did Chron die from it?"
It's starting to get cold, which means Graeme Duncan won't be with us long because a teenage snowboarding freak will cut him in half on the slopes. Kevan Silver has a bad back, goalie Hector is probably still playing with a broken leg. So who does it leave? Big Phil was seen running around for 90 minutes at Sunday soccer. He is the iron man of this outfit. Ian Sinclair is Mr Perpetual Motion - he hates nothing more than coming off the field - but is there something amiss with his striking boot? Michael Anglin seems to be in rude health - is it because he has turned up too late for the warmups recently? Mark Smith? Yes, I remember a bloke called Mark Smith. Went to a posh restaurant with a bevvy of 18 year olds and was never heard from since. Perhaps he ate a dodgy oyster . . .

Around the grounds

Our next opponent, IFS Rangers, slumped to a 2-1 loss against Puma Masters on Saturday as the goals rained in in Masters 2. Elsewhere, two of our toughest rivals, Jamberoo and Old Boys FC, battled to a 4-4 stalemate. In an astonishing result (and no disrepect to the Students but I wouldn't be surprised if it was posted the wrong way around) Uni Gangrenes won their first of the season with an 8-2 defeat of Balgownie Crows. Fernhill were on the wrong side of a 7-0 shellacking from the Makos, who we beat 3-0 in our previous game. According to stats king Kev's table (with no help from the IAFA on this) the weekend results leave us six points clear at the top, having played an extra game on the chasing pack. I note that Kev's table hasn't included Uni's win from the weekend, so maybe I'm not the only one with doubts.

Heads, we win . . .

A performance brimming with desire and determination allowed the Chogs to twice come back from a goal down to maintain a perfect record from four outings on Saturday. Against an Albion Park team intent on kicking chunks out of our players, and crying like babies when it didn't work, good trumped evil 3-2 for a first win in three attempts against the Pigs, err Cows.
After working on heading during the previous training session, it was especially pleasing to see Gary J and Ant sent in goals off their noggins, while much credit should also go to Fergus and Sean for their magic deliveries.
A slow start saw us a goal down, also to a header, inside the opening 10 minutes but were soon back on level terms and looked the better, and fitter, side going into the break. Michael's wonderful surge through the centre almost brought us a second and our midfielders were beginning to assert their power on their opponents.
The second half kicked off with us full of expectation and after five minutes of dominance it was a shock to slip 2-1 behind as a rocket whistled through Hector's attempted punch clear. Within moments we were level again through Gary J's stunning cross from deep on the right which evaded everyone and cruised sweetly into the top corner. The Cows were udder-ly despondent after throwing away a second lead and were still bitching and moaning when Sean sent in a cross which Ant rose to head in. From there there were few scares - ably dealt with by Dave Downing's back line heroes - while a bit more compsure up front might have put the game beyond doubt. Gary H, sent to hospital by this bunch of ugly hack merchants last season, was involved in a 50-50 challenge where the late arriving Cow broke his leg and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The Chogs were excellent across the park in a level of performance we didn't seem to rise to all last season. Physically punished we stood firm against the assaults. We kept our composure and stayed calm when the game went against us. And we deserved the three points completely.

Newsflash!

Hey guys, very important info!! The game is at Geoff shaw oval, Fisher St Oak Flats, not terry street reserve. this ground is behind the shops at oak flats, just behind swimming pool I think,Ian.

Match preview: Cows v Chogs

The Chogs look to have a full complement of 16 players as they try to maintain their winning start away to Albion Park Cows on Saturday (3pm). The Cows proved a tough hurdle for us last season, beating us 3-1 down there and then coming from behind to draw 1-1 at the Burg. That day will be remembered mostly for the nasty elbow inflicted on Gary Nine Stitches Hardie, a vicious offence that wasn't even deemed worthy of a freekick by a far too charitable referee.
In the opening match against them last season we gave away three sloppy goals and had only a late reply. At home we hammered them senseless in the first half without breaking through before Kevan lobbed the keeper early in the second half. An unlucky concession - a freekick which came back off the bar, hit Hector and went in - gave the Cows an undeserved point.
With 16 fit we can revert to the same game plan as against Uni - three players for two spots around the field. Gary Jordan will start in the strikers unit with Ant and Kev, although Matt is an option if a change is needed.
We are on fantastic roll but it is tough games like this which will give us a true indication of our chances this season. Warmup to start at 2.45pm with everyone dressed and ready to hit it.

The positions and three-man units

GK: PH
Outside backs: PC, MA, GH
Stopper/sweepers/ centre halfs etc : Shane, Dean, Dave
Wide mids: Ian, Matt, GD
Central mids, Sean, Fergus, GP
Strikers: Kev, Ant, GJ
Two of each on at a time

Fun while it lasted . . .

Ian said it best when he talked of that evil four letter word R-E-S-T. When the doctor uttered it today I was prepared. It's not as if I couldn't see it coming. Not being able to walk from the car to the house unaided after last week's game told me that not only weren't things improving, they were getting much worse. Being in the right place at the right time twice against the Makos had me thinking that I could still play a role. I think I still can, just not on the field.
The injury, albeit unconfirmed until a bone scan, is called osteitis pubis - an inflammation of the pelvic area. My doctor has told me to rest for a month and then come see him. Websites (here's a hint, never look at websites when you have an injury) suggest an "athlete" should take minimum 3-6 months off . No mention of how long an over the hill weekend hacker should expect to be sidelined.
So, where are we? I won't be playing for the next 4-5 games at least and am preparing myself for the big one: a season-ending situation. I hope I'm being alarmist.
Should we be thinking about approaching Greg Rendell about another player? We can discuss that here or on Saturday. If you guys are happy, I'm prepared to continue coaching, including in a training, team formation and matchday capacity. If you'd prefer to run it from within the playing ranks I'd completely respect that and come along just to cheer.

Full draw made

Details in the stats centre.

The games that weren't played on sat have been rescheduled for Sun 18th May. So much for there being no double headers....the words 'brew' and 'piss-up' spring to mind.

From the manager's desk

By Gary TT Jordan
Given our stuttered start to the season, we are indeed fortunate that after five rounds, we have played three games. Taking into account the first round bye and a washout the team is struggling to attain a measure of match fitness. Despite our slow start to the season it’s surprising to note that we are at the top of the competition table.
The way that we’re starting each week and recovering afterwards is evidence enough that our pre-match ritual is paying dividends.
The game against the Makos was pleasing from an effort perspective but it did highlight one area of concern. Ball control. Yours truly can lay claim to at least four awful passes and at least that many bad decisions.
On a positive note it was good to see the ball in our oppositions net on three occasions. Well done to Tony and Sean. At the back our defense stood solid and its welcoming to have our Goalie Pete displaying such solid early season form. (Goal Keepers, who needs 'em? indeed).
Management look forward to seeing you all at training on Wednesday, weather permitting, and encourage everyone to look to your individual fitness levels at other times of the week. I mean you ‘Cripple’. Given that it was warm on Saturday we all have excuses for our lack of physical prowess but nobody blew harder and contributed as little as that insignificant little mouth piece.
Everyone should be looking forward to the Cows next Saturday as well as the cooler weather the coming weeks will bring. The cripple hopes the selectors keep him in the side long enough to feel the chillier winter months.
Management tip of the week. The value of good work far exceeds that of a good word.

Shellharbour Makos 0 CHOGS 3

What started as a mad scramble turned into a walk in the (Morley) park as the Chogs posted a third win from as many games Saturday. More confusion over the status of matches meant a less than perfect buildup for the visitors. GD was surfing down Warilla way when he heard the news - the only problem was his kit was back home at Stanwell Park. It was a similar story for the holidaying Ant, whose neighbor had to pretend he was attending an open house at Ant's abode, grabbing his shirt and socks from the bedroom while the estate agent's back was turned. (House is looking schmick Ant). Already missing MS (work), JB (injury) and KS (away) the Chogs were further hit when GP answered the call of the wild - going on safari with the team photographer and the Mini Gs to Sydney Zoo - and was found guilty of thinking he knew how the IAFA operates.
Ultimately, we kicked off with 15 able bodies in the only Masters 2 match of the round. The other teams will now have to play a make up day, most likely on Mothers Day, so we dodged a bullet there.
The Makos contained several players from the quite good George Cross outfit which beat us twice last season but also had a smattering of newbies, as well as none of the teenagers they paraded a year earlier.
While quite adept at moving the ball through their midfielders, the Makos lacked a cutting edge up front and were prone to panic at the back.
Ian made the most of their lack of composure after about 15 minutes, swinging a long ball from the left towards TH10 at the far post. A defender failed to cut it out and TH10's ample belly cushioned the ball down for him to sidefoot past the keeper. TH10 missed a golden opportunity for a second soon after following a picked up backpass by the Makos keeper. Ant should have been hitting it with his left but instead the senior forward sent it blazing high and wide.
There were other chances too, Ant whistling one wide at the near post, TH10 sending his header straight at the keeper and Sean just failing to connect with a superb deep cross from Matt.
Whenever the Makos threatened the defence got good bodies in front of the ball or Hector continued his fantastic early season form between the sticks. GD and Fergus came off second best in sickening aerial collisions and the Chogs were hanging on as the halftime whistle blew.
Fergus came into the game sporting a hangover and the knock on the head did little to improve his health.
The substitution system went horribly wrong in the second half to the extent that the Chogs lost their shape and sometimes the plot. At one stage we had four defenders on the sideline, on another it was three attackers.
Despite the self inflicted wounds, we managed to forge further ahead, Sean being sent clean through and rounding the keeper to slot in the second against the run of play. Soon after he played a perfectly weighted ball over the head of the Makos centre half and TH10 trundled through to clip the ball first time past the advancing keeper and into the far corner of the net.
The third completely deflated the opposition who resorted to long shots, although they did threaten when DJ brought down an attacker inside the box. The ref called it outside, wrongly, and in a shot which summed up the Makos afternoon, the ball rifled against the bar and was squirrelled off to safety by our resilient defence. Gary H's wonderful goal saving tackle, Brick Wall Phil's unpassability and a stunning low save by Hector typified our defensive effort.
Matt picked up a booking for kicking the ball away - Fergus was most aggrieved that Sue Phillipson was taking photos of monkeys at the time - and the forwards messed up a few golden opportunities to add to the scoreline. All in all, a satisfying way to surge clear at the top of the table. We are scoring goals, keeping clean sheets and winning while mindful that we have improvement in us. Happy days.

Rain, IAFA and other catastrophes

I'm sure Roo will post the full draw in our stats centre when he returns from his northern excursion. Until then you can find it on the IAFA website (look at the links on the left of the IAFA home page).
http://www.iafa.com.au
Ian raises a couple of points in earlier comments. The first is the decision to not replay washouts this season. Already that has cost us a game and will probably cost us another this weekend. On that, even though it might be sunny at Warilla, the policy of no replays of washouts means they must call off all games or none. They can't play our match against Shellharbour and call off the games in the WCC area because there would be no chance for the others to make it up.
Now I admit to being one of the loudest whingers last season when we twice had to back up for Sunday matches against teams who had a bye on the Saturday. I still remember the hamstring pain and the feeling of complete effedness which set in around the 70 minute mark of game two. Yet, it was a better system than the current one. I have asked the organisers how they came to this decision but can't get an answer. Ian suggests we lobby for the return of washout replays. I agree with him but am mindful that not everyone likes or wants the doubleheaders.
I can't see anything changing this season but I've put a new poll up at left so you can have a vote. I agree with Ian that we need a presence at the IAFA meetings but I'm not in the position to do this because of other committee work. Perhaps Ian or someone else would like to have a think about doing this and investigating how we can have a better say before next season.
If we vote to support replays as a team then our representative can take up the case with the IAFA.
